Nicaragua - San Isidru (Washed) - Espresso

San Isidru is the first coffee we have ever roasted from Nicaragua and we are delighted with it. If you like your Central American coffees to be full bodied with a complex acidity, this is the coffee for you .

Why did we buy this coffee?

We cupped this coffee alongside 11 other Nicaraguan coffees and San Isidro was by far the most nuanced and interesting. We were looking for a complex Central American coffee to run as a black coffee in our shops and to sell to our speciality focussed customers, and in San Isidro we found a perfect match.

What's good about it?

San Isidru presents the most complex flavour profile of any Nicaraguan coffee we have cupped this year. It has a creamy body that is underpinned by a deep caramel sweetness, balanced with delicate flavours of rose hip and honeydew melon.

What machines can I make this coffee on?

Due to it being a light roast and varietal type, we recommend using this coffee on pro-sumer espresso machines, such as a Rocket, Marzocco, Expobar (Pro-Sumer). Other machines such as Dualit, De'Longhi or Gaggia Classics may struggle with it.

This coffee is not the easiest to work with, mainly due to its large screen size and the light roast profile. To get the best out of this coffee, you will need a high end grinder (EK43, Mythos or Made by Knock) and a quality espresso machine.

Don't have an espresso machine?

This coffee will also work well as a pour over (v60, Kalita Wave etc), but also as a in a Cafetiere, Clever Dripper or Aeropress, offering you a full bodied full immersion coffee.

Flavour notes:

Caramel, Honeydew Melon, Rose and a descriptor of Velvety.

We roast on Tue, Wed & Thurs. Your coffee will be roasted within 5 days of purchase, with a shelf life of 6 weeks (optimum serving point of 10-36 days).

Background Info:

The first thing you will notice about this coffee is the size of the beans - they are massive, around twice the size of most varieties. Maragogype is an “elephant bean” mutation of Typica that is usually low yielding.

Finca San Isidru is driven by the innovative approach of Byron Rodriguez. He has built a new wet mill on the farm that has a built in sorting system that separates the coffees by weight. This results in a consistently clean and high quality coffees that we are delighted to offer to our customers.
