Kenya - Wathenga AB (Washed) - Filter

It's Kenyan coffee season, so it's when all the really exciting African coffees start arriving on mass. Lots to choose from, and some interesting varietals on offer, from the typical SL28 & SL34 through to the lesser known Batian and K7.

Origin & traceability:

Specific origin information is a tricky one from Kenya, as it's not that common for importers to work with actual farms, but more so with co-operatives and / or washing stations. This is for a number of reasons, but often due to the fact that many farms are too small to operate alone and require to operate as groups for processing and sales.


Wathenga (the name of this coffee) is actually the name of the washing station, with the coop that use it named 'Gaturi'.  But due to the coffee being from so many small holders, it makes more sense to name it after the collective effort of the washing station itself. Hence 'Wathenga'...

Kenya AB coffee beans consist of both A and B coffee beans. The A grade is sorted using a 6.8 mm screen while the B grade is sorted using a 6.2 mm screen. These two types of beans, A and B, are mixed together to form the grade Kenya AB. AB are not lower quality than that of AA, but simply a different screen size, which does not always reflect quality, but merely surface area.


We tend to select around 3 Kenyan's each season and like to go for opposing examples if possible, showcasing the origins diversity of coffees. We love clean and simple Kenyan's that have a solid blackcurrant body, but also like wild and complex Kenyan's with extreme acidity and multiple layers of flavour. 

Choosing this coffee:

We have already chosen a Kenyan in the form of Ngariama, which has proven to be hugely popular, with its robust wine like body and rich stewed fruit flavours.

Wathenga is completely different in style, giving off layers of complexity, supported by a strong cranberry tartness and bright acidity. It's a coffee that you can brew in a number of different ways, depending on what you prefer to draw out more of.

What's the best way to brew it?

This coffee excels as a pour over (V60, Chemex or Kalita Wave etc), allowing you to extract more complex characteristics of this coffee. If you're more about that heavy body, try putting it through an Aeropress, Cafetiere, or Clever Dripper, as this will help bring out those bold characteristics.

Wathenge Coffee Factory is operated by the New Gaturi Farmers Cooperative Society, which has about 3,500 smallholder members who deliver to five different washing stations in the area. the area has red volcanic soil and most of the producers own between 1/5th and 1/3rd of a hectare of land, where they grow coffee as well as bananas, corn, sweet potato, and other cash crops.

We roast on Tue, Wed & Thurs. Your coffee will be roasted within 5 days of purchase, with a shelf life of 6 weeks (optimum serving point of 10-36 days).
