Rwanda - Mafene (Washed) - Espresso
Mafene AA is our first Rwandan coffee of the season and it’s a cracker. It has the high acidity you would expect from a Rwandan, complemented by a sugary sweetness and a very clean body.
Why did we buy this coffee?
We were looking for a bright, fruit driven coffee to serve as a black coffee in our shops and to sell to our quality focussed wholesale customers. After cupping a huge range of coffees from Rwanda and Burundi, we found the perfect match in Mafene.
What's good about it?
While many Rwandan coffees display the complex lime and green apple acidity present in this coffee, it is the sweetness that makes this coffee unique. It has a syrupy sweetness that reminds us of damson plum jam.
What machines can I make this coffee on?
This coffee is not the easiest to work with, mainly due to its high acidity and the light roast profile. To get the best out of this coffee, you will need either a commercial set up, or a pro home set up such as an E61, Rocket, La Marzocco etc and a decent grinder.
Don't have an espresso machine?
This coffee will also work well as a full immersion, such as a cafetiere, Aeropress or Clever.
Plum Jam, Lime, Parma Violets plus a descriptor of Complex.
The AA Micro-lot lot is a separation from the 633 farmers that are currently using the Kinini washing station, chosen from trees at altitudes of 2000masl and above, and with screen size 16+. The terroir is excellent for producing coffee, with neighbouring areas producing Cup of Excellence winning coffees.
Coffee is picked and brought to the Kinini washing station (newly built in May, 2016) where it is separated from the other lots to be treated de-pulped using a four disc McKinnon pulper and fermented from between 5 to 20 hours.
