Background info:
Not far from the border of Muranga County is the former district, now town, Mukurwe-ini. It is within these boundaries that the Thangathi wet mill is situated, closer to Kiriniyaga County and one of five wet mills that belong to the New Gikaru Farmers Cooperative Society. Built in the 1960s and originally belonging to Giant Mukurweini FCS, the company split in 2000 and smaller cooperatives formed to take over different mills with a representative for each one elected to the board of the society to look after management. They currently have 1350 registered members with an average of 200 trees per farm.

The bronzed tips of SL34 and bright yellow green of SL28 form nearly 90% of the coffee grown, with around 7% Ruiru 11, and the rest Batian, a varietal that shares its name with the peak of the mountain slopes on which it is grown. Handpicked when ripe, cherry is delivered to the wet mill the same day to ensure no uncontrolled fermentation occurs, where it is sorted again and then pulped. River water is used for processing and recirculated before disposal, with the coffee being sent out to dry in the sun. Once dry, the coffee is taken to the Kofinaf dry mill for hulling and bagging in preparation for export. Coffee in this area is usually grown alongside other products such as tea and corn, as well as large areas devoted to dairy production.
