Ethiopia - Nano Challa (Washed) - Espresso
£9.25

Nano Challa is a bit of an iconic name in Ethiopian coffee. The name is associated with high quality, very clean cups that are typical of very well processed native heirlooms. For the last 2-3 years we have avoided buying it, as so many other roasteries bought and offered it, so we looked to offer an alternative coffee instead.

However, this years crop was so fantastic, we opted to take it on, as we didn't want to miss out on such a fantastic coffee. And we're super glad we did!

What's good about it?

Nano Challa is an awesome espresso that offers great complexity, with it's washed process giving you a refined and very clean cup. You get the sweetness shining through almost like honey, alongside the tartness of marmalade and slight zing of citrus. Tasting and very moreish.

What's the best way to serve this coffee?

Due to its complex nature, it really needs a machine that can handle fine grind and delivers a solid / stable temperature, such as a La Marzocco, Rocket, ECM, Bezerra or Expobar (Pro-Sumer). If you have the likes of a Rancilio Silvia, Gaggia Classic, De'Longhi or Dualit, you might struggle with this coffee.

Flavour notes:

Orange Marmalade, Citrus, Honey, with a descriptor of Coating.

Background info:

Nano Challa cooperative was established in 2004 by an initial 25 farmer members from the Agaro town in the Jimma Zone, Oromia, Western Ethiopia. The founder members formed the group in order to foster unity and to share in addressing issues they were facing around finding good buyers for their coffee, alleviating debt and improving standards of production. The name Nano Challa in Oromifa means "the area above", a reference to their prime coffee growing location at high altitudes, benefitting from beautiful natural forest and rich organic soils.

Part of Nano Challa's strength lies in being part of the Kata Muduga Multipurpose Farmer's Cooperative Union. Since 2010, Nano Challa's membership has risen to over 400 and the quality improvements initiated alongside Technoserve have seen the coop's coffees become some of the finest, most sought after in the whole of the country. This has led to radically improving the livelihoods of farmers and their families in the region. Farmer members cultivate coffees at altitudes between 1850 and 2100 metres, and have around 3 hectares of land each, on average.

Once producers deliver coffee to the washing station, cherries are floated before being de-pulped using a Penagos Eco Pulper. The coffee is then soaked in clean water in concrete tanks for 8 hours before drying; firstly skin-dried and sorted under shade, before being sun-dried for approximately 10 days on raised African drying beds.
