Colombia - Jorge Emilio (Washed) - Filter Colombia - Jorge Emilio (Washed) - Filter

This is our second new Colombian of the new season (2019). It's a beautiful mix of  washed Castillo & Columbia varietals from the region of Tolima, that has been responsible for producing some amazing coffees over the years. Jorge Emilio is an amazing example of this regions output.

Why did we buy this coffee?

We bought this coffee just as a filter coffee. It's way too complex and varied to work as an espresso, and would be lost in milk in the world of lattes and cappuccino's. It stood out a mile on the cupping table, as a coffee that lots of different coffee drinkers would love, not just the coffee aficionados.

What's good about it?

Jorge Emilio is super complex, with its most prominent characteristic being its huge heavy body and rich punch fruit notes. Whilst this coffee is super complex and rich, it is also very sweet and easy to drink.

What's the best way to prepare this coffee?

It's a very full bodied coffee, but it's capable of producing both a rich and balanced brew by way of a full immersion (Cafetiere, Batch Brew or Clever), but also capable of being a very complex and varied filter by way of pour over (Kalita, Chemex etc).

Flavour notes:

Red Grape, Caramel, Red Cherry, with a descriptor of Heavy.

We roast on Tue, Wed & Thurs. Your coffee will be roasted within 5 days of purchase, with a shelf life of 6 weeks (optimum serving point of 10-36 days).

Background info:

Jorge Emilio Brazo is originally from the traditional coffee area of Ibague, Tolima. When he was young his father used to own some small lots of coffee and sugar cane for Panela. It was from spending time with his father on these small coffee lots that he acquired a passion for the land and for coffee. In his early adult life Jorgemigrated to the city to study economics, and worked for a number of years as a professional in finance.

After some years of working at big companies, he decided to go back to the rural area to pursue his real passion for farming. He bought his own coffee farm of 9 hectares, where he was able to apply the coffee farming knowledge that he acquired from his parents; knowledge that he has since passed onto his own son.

During the harvest season, each lot on the farm is hand picked every 15 to 20 days for ripe cherries. The coffee is then separated and floated before they ferment it in a tank or in clean bags for 22 hours. After that, the coffee is washed and sun dried it in a parabolic dryer for 10 - 15 days.

Currently the farm generates employment for 5 people, who live on the farm year round. During harvest, Jorge employs an additional 10 to 15 more people to work with them and help manage the harvest and processing.
