Name: Harry Bainbridge
Role at Machina: Marketing & Communications Officer
At Machina, you will normally find me... eating Custard Creams whilst posting on Instagram, making gifs, and pretending to know how to use Photoshop.
To me, coffee is... new. I’m a beginner, but I’m learning and tasting new things every day.
What is your go-to coffee? A flat white or a long black.
What kit do you use to make coffee at home? I mostly use an Aeropress and like playing around with different recipes and techniques. I grind with *whispers* an old blade grinder, which isn't the best and wakes my flatmates up every time. I'm trying to figure out how to sneak a Wilfa Svart out of the warehouse.
Best coffee experience ever: I used to live right next to the North Star Coffee Shop in Leeds, and my day off treat would be reading with a flat white and their Morning Cake. I really love the space and feel of that cafe.
North Star Coffee Shop, Leeds
Worst coffee experience ever: A long black (or café allongé) from a French supermarket in Lyon that tasted like soured misery.
How did you end up working in coffee? By accident, really. My background in marketing is mostly in the music and fashion industries. Coffee was just a hobby – I’d worked as a barista for a while at Opposite in Leeds, but had a pretty superficial understanding of it otherwise. I liked the idea of pushing myself to learn about something new.
Out of 10, how much of a coffee geek are you? Maybe a 6.5 – I use the Best Coffee app and have a few brewing methods at home, but I still enjoy an occasional Starbucks and haven’t quite graduated to watching YouTube videos or weighing my coffee.
Top coffee tip: I feel like this is not the most popular coffee opinion, but I love brewing filter coffee with my old Bialetti Moka. I get really rich and interesting results – though sometimes it’s truly disgusting. It’s all about trial and error.
Most underrated hot beverage in your humble opinion: Hot Toddy – gets you drunk AND makes you feel better when you’re ill, a win win for all.
Coffee-loving Bob Benson, Mad Men
What do you like to do when you’re not drinking coffee? Playing board games, reading, drinking red wine, or watching Mad Men or Seinfeld. At the moment, it’s The Sopranos. I'm also studying for a masters in modernist and contemporary literature.
What albums are in your current rotation?
The War on Drugs – A Deeper Understanding
SZA – Ctrl
A. Savage – Thawing Dawn
Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (never not in rotation, tbh)
Guiltiest pleasure: ‘Timber’ by Ke$ha and Pitbull, any animated film, or AC/DC. I fucking love AC/DC.
